Based on the real 2024 caravan

The middle leg of the 2024 Quebec 100th Anniversary caravan. Picking up from the Banff area, this route heads east across the vast Canadian prairies — through Regina, Winnipeg, and the Lake Superior north shore — before turning south at Niagara Falls and continuing into Quebec.

This is the long-haul section. The prairie stretches are flat and fast but fuel-hungry. The north shore of Lake Superior between Thunder Bay and Sault Ste. Marie is one of the most remote and beautiful drives in North America — plan fuel and cell coverage accordingly.

Every stop listed below is a real RV park used by the caravan, with actual addresses, phone numbers, and site-specific notes on amp service and coach accommodations.

Must-Stop Destinations

Niagara Falls, Ontario

Niagara Falls from the Canadian Side

Everyone thinks they know Niagara until they see it from the Canadian side. The American view is fine — the Canadian view is jaw-dropping. You get both falls in one panorama, the mist rises up and catches the light, and at night they light the whole thing up in colors that shouldn't work but absolutely do. We stayed three nights and went back to the falls every evening. Never got old.

Rick's Tip

Skip the tourist-trap restaurants on Clifton Hill — drive 20 minutes to Niagara-on-the-Lake for a proper meal. The wine country out there is legitimate. And do the Hornblower boat cruise — yes it's touristy, yes you'll get soaked, and yes it's absolutely worth it. The KOA on Lundy's Lane has 50-amp pull-thru and Steve runs a tight operation.

The Lake Superior North Shore Drive

This is 700 kilometers of the most gorgeous, most remote driving you'll ever do in a motorcoach. Raw Canadian Shield — granite walls dropping into Superior, boreal forest as far as you can see, and stretches where you won't pass another vehicle for 30 minutes. It's humbling in the best way. Lesley and I pulled over at a random overlook near Wawa and sat there for an hour watching waves crash against the rocks. No one else around.

Rick's Tip

I cannot stress this enough — fill your tanks at EVERY station. They're 100-200 km apart and some close early. White River is your halfway fuel stop. Cell service is basically nonexistent for long stretches, so download your maps offline before you start this leg. And give yourself a full day — don't rush this drive.

Quebec City, Quebec

Old Quebec City

Walking through Old Quebec feels like someone dropped a European city into North America. Cobblestone streets, the Château Frontenac towering over everything, street performers, incredible food — it's unlike any other city on this continent. We spent a full day just wandering and eating. The Plains of Abraham are perfect for a morning walk. And if you're on this route, you're heading to the Prevost factory in Sainte-Claire — which is its own kind of pilgrimage.

Rick's Tip

Do NOT bring your coach into Old Quebec — trust me on this. Leave it at the campground in Saint-Philippe and drive or shuttle in. The streets are narrow, steep, and made for horses, not 45-foot Prevosts. Sophie at Camping la Clé des Champs will take good care of you. It's 50-amp pull-thru and only 177 miles from the Prevost factory.

Lesley's Route Notes

Timing, Miles & What to Know

Lesley plans every route — she maps the stops, times the drives, calls ahead to confirm coach accommodations, and knows exactly how to manage the miles so you arrive with daylight and energy to enjoy each destination.

Banff to Regina

507 miles — the big prairie crossing

This is the longest single-day drive on the entire trip. Leave Cochran early and settle in for a full day of prairie driving. It's beautiful in its own way — enormous sky, golden wheat, grain elevators on the horizon — but it's a commitment. Kings Acres in Regina only has 15-amp service, so plan your power needs accordingly. Run everything off the generator before plugging in.

Regina to Winnipeg

351 miles — manageable and scenic

An easier day after the long prairie haul. The Winnipeg West KOA has proper 50-amp pull-thru sites — you'll appreciate the upgrade after Regina. Dersch runs a good park. Take an evening to explore The Forks in downtown Winnipeg — it's where the rivers meet and the food scene is surprisingly good.

Winnipeg to Thunder Bay

457 miles — welcome to the Canadian Shield

The landscape changes dramatically on this leg. Flat prairie gives way to the rocky, forested Canadian Shield. You'll cross into Ontario somewhere around Kenora — stop at the lake there for a stretch. Thunder Bay KOA has 50-amp but book online only, no phone reservations. The Terry Fox monument just outside Thunder Bay is worth a 15-minute stop.

Thunder Bay to Sault Ste. Marie

458 miles — the Lake Superior stretch

This is the most remote leg of the entire trip. Gas stations are 100-200 km apart. Fill up at EVERY opportunity. Cell service disappears for long stretches — download your maps offline. White River is your halfway point for fuel. The drive along Superior is absolutely breathtaking but don't rush it. Some coaches may need longer power connectors at the Sault KOA — bring a 50-amp extension cord.

Sault Ste. Marie to Niagara Falls

500 miles — back to civilization

You'll feel the difference immediately — more towns, more services, more traffic. The drive through Ontario farm country is pleasant and easy. Steve at the Niagara Falls KOA has 50-amp pull-thru sites and knows how to handle big coaches. Allow at least two nights at Niagara — one for the falls (go at night for the illumination) and one for Niagara-on-the-Lake wine country.

Niagara to Quebec

438 miles — crossing into French Canada

Once you pass Montreal the highway signs switch to French. Sophie at Camping la Clé des Champs speaks English and will take care of you. This is your staging point for the Prevost factory in Sainte-Claire — only 177 miles away. If you have time, drive into Old Quebec City for a day — it's unlike anything else in North America. Just don't bring the coach into the old city.

Pro Tips

The prairie stretches (Regina to Winnipeg, Winnipeg to Thunder Bay) are long and flat. Plan fuel stops and rest breaks every 200 miles.
Cell coverage between Thunder Bay and Sault Ste. Marie is unreliable for hours. Download offline maps before leaving Thunder Bay.
Kings Acres in Regina is 15 amp only — plan your electrical usage accordingly. Short stay, one night.
The Trans-Canada between Thunder Bay and Sault Ste. Marie is single-lane in sections with limited passing. Allow extra time.
Niagara Falls KOA fills fast in summer. Book well ahead — it's one of the most popular KOA locations in Canada.
Old Quebec City streets cannot accommodate a 45-foot coach. Park at your campground and shuttle or drive a tow vehicle into the city.
