Blue Ridge
Parkway
America's Favorite Drive — 469 miles of mountain splendor, built for the open road. Here's everything a Prevost owner needs to know before the first mile.
The Blue Ridge Parkway is often called "America's Favorite Drive" — and for good reason. Stretching 469 miles from Afton, Virginia to Cherokee, North Carolina, it traverses the spine of the Appalachian Mountains through some of the East Coast's most extraordinary scenery.
For Prevost owners, this route delivers a genuinely spectacular journey. But it demands real preparation. Tunnel clearances that will stop a 45-foot coach cold, steep grades that demand engine braking, and the complete absence of fuel on the Parkway itself — these aren't details you discover in the moment. We've done the homework. Here's everything you need.

Must-Stop Destinations

Peaks of Otter Lodge
Lakeside lodge set against the dramatic backdrop of Sharp Top Mountain. Full-hookup coach parking available in the adjacent RV lot. Abbott Lake at sunrise — when mist clings to the water and Sharp Top catches the first light — is one of the most quietly spectacular sights on the Appalachian spine.
Book the lakeside pull-through sites early. Spots fill by noon on fall weekends. The lodge restaurant does a proper breakfast — worth a slow morning here.

Mabry Mill
The most photographed landmark on the entire Parkway. A beautifully preserved 19th-century grist mill sits beside a reflective millpond, often draped in morning mist. The adjacent restaurant serves buckwheat pancakes made from the mill's own stone-ground flour — the kind of thing that justifies a slow travel day.
Hazard immediately south: an 8.2% grade descent. Set your retarder before the mill, not after. This is the section that catches drivers off guard.
Tunnel Height Clearances
Your H3-45 typically measures 13'0" to 13'6" with roof AC units deployed. Study every tunnel before you roll — some are hard stops for Prevost coaches.
Lowest tunnel on the Parkway. H3-45 coaches with standard roof AC will NOT fit. This is a hard stop.
Alternate: Exit via US-221 near Blowing Rock, NC and rejoin south of the tunnel
Tight clearance — coaches over 12'10" should use an alternate route or measure with extreme care.
Measure with all roof AC units deployed at full height
Marginal clearance. Some Prevost models with large roof AC configurations may be too tall.
Measure your specific coach — AC unit sizes vary by model and year
Tight but passable for most Prevost coaches. Standard H3-45 typically clears with inches to spare.
Proceed slowly and stay centered
Always measure your specific coach before approaching any tunnel. Heights vary with roof AC units, satellite dishes, and other roof-mounted equipment. When in doubt, take the alternate.

“The most beautiful road in America — and one of the most demanding for a 45-foot coach.”
